Social Studies, Grade 8 focuses on American history and North Carolina's role in U.S. history. The course will begin with basic geography and transition to America's European background through modern American History.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:

  • Identify geographical features and factors that influenced the development of North Carolina and the United States.

  • Understand the factors that contributed to change in North Carolina and the United States.

  • Describe how early settlers established colonies in the United States.

  • Explain the causes and effects of the American Revolution, U.S. expansion, and the Civil War.

  • Describe the impact of the World Wars.

  • Describe postwar issues in the United States and North Carolina.
