Language Arts 5 continues to build on the sequential development and integration of communication skills in four major areas—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will read excerpts from Beowulf, Gulliver's Travels, and various short stories, nonfiction pieces, and poetry.

English Language Arts 5 Course Objectives

  • Develop basic reading skills including the identification of main ideas, supporting details, sequence, and facts and opinions.

  • Begin to develop more advanced reading skills, including making inferences based on reading material.

  • Categorize parts of speech including nouns, adverbs, and verb tenses.

  • Identify various types of nonfiction, including biographies, autobiographies, and short essays.

  • Expand literary comprehension skills through reading short stories, nonfiction pieces, and poetry.

  • Recognize and understand the difference between various parts of speech including adjectives, nouns, and verbs.

  • Identify and use correct subject-verb agreement.

  • Understand roots, affixes, and basic word relationships, including homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms.

  • Develop abilities in writing paragraphs, dialogue, poetry and short stories, with special attention to vocabulary and spelling skills.

  • Plan, organize, write, and revise a complete report for review
