Students enrolled in English Language and Composition (for use with AP* courses) will read, explore, and evaluate United States literature with a focus on nonfiction prose. From understanding the thesis and the author’s basic assumptions to the use of stylistic elements and structures, students will analyze literary works both on and offline. Supplemental books are required.
In addition to exploring U.S. literature, students will also improve their language proficiency through written assignments that require skillful use of vocabulary and sentence structure. Journals and formal essays are an integral part of daily lessons in which students can demonstrate their ability to organize their thoughts, present a valid argument, and overall mastery of grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation.
