Cyber Schools Get Creative
Increased enthusiasm among students for online classes and a trend toward technology-driven learning environments has schools across the country looking for ways to enhance education with technology. Many want real alternatives and compelling options. Many are starting charter/virtual schools and using online curriculum.
Educators who use online curriculum can choose from pre-written lesson plans, complete curriculum packages, and hybrid models. In much the same manner as traditional paper-based curriculum comes in many shapes and sizes, online curriculum is as individual as schools themselves.
Because it is written to accomodate many schools in many markets, sometimes it’s difficult to find the right mix. It becomes important for educators to find curiculum that is easy to adapt to the specific needs of its school and students.
Students choose distance learning for their own reasons: some because of physical limitations, others for social or emotional reasons, and still others because of the online delivery system and flexibility. Whatever the case, global doors that may not be open to them in a traditional classroom are now open.
With an emphasis on individualized learning, ODYSSEYWARE is a natural learning environment for these students. One successful charter school used ODYSSEYWARE’s built-in course authoring tool to develop an orientation course to help students get acquainted with the curriculum.
Designed to look and “act” like an actual ODYSSEYWARE course, the orientation allows students to not only learn about the curriculum and how to use it, but gives them the hands-on experience of navigating inside the online learning environment. When they complete the orientation course, they’re ready to jump right in and get started.
Course authoring is only one of the exciting features available to ODYSSEYWARE teachers. With an emphasis on differentiated learning, teachers can offer each of their students a personalized course of study that is best suited to their learning styles and pace.
Course development tools from ODYSSEYWARE make it easy to customize or even create your own course. Students choose distance learning for their own reasons: some because of physical limitations, others for social or emotional reasons, and still others because of the online delivery system and flexibility. Whatever the case, global doors that may not be open to them in a traditional classroom are now open.
Many students who were challenged by traditional classroom instruction are now enjoying the increased satisfaction that comes with academic success. Schools all over the country are now able to better meet the needs of their diverse student populations with ODYSSEYWARE and a little creative inspiration.
I would love to know more about their orientation course. What information was included? How long is it? How is it facilitated (group? one-on-one?)? Is there a way for me to see the orientation course they’ve created so that I might adapt or author my own?
Hi Stacie,
I have sent you a couple of links and documents via email that should better explain the course. I think that creating an orientation for ODYSSEYWARE with ODYSSEYWARE makes perfect sense. Why didn’t we think of that? Thanks for the comment. Let us know if you decide to do the same and how your students respond.
