GED vs. Diploma

Is the GED a Fair Test of College and Career Readiness?

ODYSSEYWARE on June 25th, 2010 No Comments

A working paper published this month by the Bureau of Economic Research suggests that the easy availability and the low cost of GED testing may be inducing students to drop out of high school.

At a time when so much emphasis is being placed on increasing graduation rates, especially in high-poverty school districts, making the GED more widely available seems to be counterproductive. Read more »

How to Get from Novelty to Necessity

ODYSSEYWARE, Tech Tip on June 24th, 2010 No Comments

It’s great to talk about technology in schools, the way it can engage students, and provide data to administrators to aid in making great decisions. Unfortunately, sometimes there’s a big disconnect between where you are and where you want to go. That big disconnect is often the question “how?”

So today when I ran across an article by Mickey Revenaugh about technology planning for schools, I thought it was definitely worth sharing. Read more »

What do a hammer and a laptop have in common?

At first glance, one would think, not much. One is prehistoric; one is 21st century. One is heavy; the other is light. One has survived the test of time; the other requires further study to prove its effectiveness. Read more »

Mobile technology has become integrated into the very fabric of our lives, but for our kids, it’s hasn’t “become” anything. It simply “is” how they communicate, or more accurately, how they live.

Mobile learning is the focus a special section released in District Administrator magazine this month, which follows the adventures of four trailblazing programs that have at their center, mobile learning devices (MLDs). From this special section: Read more »

Hearing the Parental Voice in Education Reform

ODYSSEYWARE on June 21st, 2010 No Comments

Today I read a commentary that made me think about the role of parents in educating their children. The first thing I realized is that, no matter how much I try to stay on top of all things related to education reform, I was missing a big piece of the picture, and I was not alone.

I researched teacher training, online learning, funding, and dropout rates. I read about Blueprints for Reform, No Child Left Behind, and Race to the Top. But nowhere did I see any new ideas about the role of parents. Light bulb moment: for all the talking we do about partnerships between schools, teachers, and parents, we aren’t giving parents anything tangible to help them be better facilitators in the educational process. Few Public High Schools Make the Grade

News, ODYSSEYWARE on June 16th, 2010 No Comments

What does it take to be the best? When it comes to high schools, Newsweek has decided that it all comes down to one thing: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Cambridge tests given at a school each year divided by the number of graduating seniors. One point should be noted: the scores of students taking these tests don’t matter. Read more »

The Shortest Distance between Students and Academic Success

ODYSSEYWARE, Research on June 15th, 2010 No Comments

I have a boss who is fond of saying, “Work smarter, not harder.” He’s an insightful guy. I couldn’t help but think of him today as I read through news stories about year-round school and six-day school weeks.

I certainly want kids to succeed in school and to be able to compete academically with their peers on the other side of the world. I’m just not sure that more hours of sitting in class is the shortest distance between students and academic success. When I think about the amount of unproductive time built into each school day, my belief in individualized learning continues to grow. Read more »
